TOPIC : Herpes Zoster TCM /WM Treatment in Pain Management (4 units)

LECTURER : Dr. Jun peng Qiu / Yong Wu

DATE : December 7, 2008 9:00 am – noon

PLACE : South Baylo University Auditorium (L.A. campus)

The objective of this course is to assess the public health burden of Herpes Zoster as well as evaluate the efficacy and limitations of current pain management for Herpes Zoster throughout clinical experience. Dr. Qiu will briefly introduce the pathophysiology of Herpes Zoster. Then, he will focus on Western medicine treatment in the pain control of Herpes Zoster as well as share his clinical experience with the practitioners.

Dr. Qiu states that patients with mild to moderate pain can be treated with over-the-counter analgesics. Topical lotions containing calamine can be used on the rash or blisters and may be soothing. Occasionally, severe pain may require an opioid medication, such as morphine. Once the lesions have crusted over, capsaicin cream (Zostrix) can be used. Topical lidocaine and nerve blocks may also reduce pain.

Dr. Yong Wu will introduce therapeutic principle that removes heat from the blood in TCM. Herbal remedies can reduce the viral infection and acupuncture therapy can use to relieve the severe pain of Herpes Zoster in its later stage. The herbal remedies are frequently used in combination with acupuncture as well as with other types of healing for shingles

In this lecture, the treating practitioners will learn not only the background but also assessment methods of Herpes Zoster from Dr. Qiu’s and Dr. Wu’s clinical occurrences.

Year-End party will be held after the seminar at the same place Tongue out
